The Great Resignation – Great Reshuffling

ree

Since the pandemic that took the world by storm, almost everything has taken a turn in directions where no one would have expected. And in some areas, it expedited its presence in the course of change.

What many thought was a just a cold virus has not only impacted one’s health but through to the living lifestyle. A 4-day working day culture and the on-and-off working from home culture tapped by some companies prior to the pandemic, has suddenly forced many employers to dive into this change especially the remote working culture.

People are Re-thinking & Re-considering

So many adjustments were made from all aspects to ensure that everyone’s health are somewhat safe while striving to do what used to be done – the ‘normality’.

The working from home or remote working culture has given many, across all ages the opportunity to re-think and re-consider what truly matters in their life. Work-life balance, flexibility in employment arrangement, dated company culture are some of the reasons why there are more to just performing jobs and getting paid.

As such, some, upon reflections, took the leap of faith in starting their own business doing the thing they are passionate about, or they are expert in. Some, took the courage to cross industry taking with them their experiences and applying them in industries which they thought about but never got into it before.

Great Resignations & Great Reshuffling

The shake-up in the workforce through the movement of employees within and across industries together with the courage to take the leap, birthed The Great Resignation leading to The Great Reshuffles. They are happening not because salary compensation system is weak. But because they are seeking more meaning to life than just work alone & often seeking roles which could retain the flexibility post pandemic. With the expansive work force which are highly educated, this Great Reshuffles are seeing executives moving and shifting careers landing into roles that offer higher remuneration which aligns more with their values in the longer term.

The younger generations are seeking healthier retirement and not continuously bogged down by loans even when it is time for a more fulfilled life as they wind down in life – as opposed to the previous generations where loans and commitments are a must-attached-to to live by.

Healthier lifestyle is definitely on the plate, so it allows people to spend time on their hobbies & passions, making sure their retirement is not called out because of illnesses stemming from the accumulated burnout or stress from work.

Before the pandemic, many were striving to fit their lives into their work. Now, people are much in tune in fitting work in their lives in search of a more fulfilling life.

A Little Adjustments

Work burnout and stress of the people usually happens when they are overworked, the tasks of 2 person is done by 1 person with remuneration paid thereof of 1. This easily demotivate and decrease the morale of people.

In some part of the world, many are still ‘pleading’ employers or businesses for work-life balance and for some, seeking for more humane leaders.

To seek a balance in the workforce and, perhaps continuity in the business for some, the task remains at the core for the leaders in the industries & businesses. Afterall, all organizational cultures stem from the behaviours of the leaders and any changes in retrospect.

Employers, businesses & companies can begin by adjusting their working culture through flexibility and hybrid working opportunity. In plain words, leaders could begin adjustments by creating opportunities that can support and retain employees in the long run.

Incorporating continuous learning for employees so they are equipped with new knowledge & skills creates opportunity for them to move forward in their career. In some bigger corporation, a chance to initiate internal mobility culture can begin wherein roles can be assumed by internal people that could expand their experience. These are ways that could contribute in supporting employees achieve a fulfilling life.

Additionally, leaders cultivating humane values through inclusion will spark more joy in the work they do and more harmony in the environment they interact.

What Now?

Sometimes, having full control of everything and putting everything under one roof to retain autonomy could stall the business. A change in the management and operational strategy involving outsourcing or offshoring can (perhaps) help resolve overworking of team members or cutting hiring costs for the business. Collaboration and co-creation with outsourced providers could spark many opportunities that could benefit the business as a whole. Cultivate the trust in work done by experts in the specific field and exercising work delegation through collaboration could be ways in tackling work-burnout of the people.

With change being constant in almost every aspect of our lives, making a little change in the business for the well-being of the people who work for the business goes a long way.

We believe, when the team is healthy, the business prospers. And when we say healthy, we also include the mental health of the team because we know, mental health is not a taboo, it is a subject matter that save life when prioritized accordingly.
