On 7th December 2020 night, I was contacted by one of my old school mate’s sister on social media. I thought it was odd after a long time. She informed me that my friend was very ill. She was diagnosed with colon cancer – stage 4 and has spread to other parts of her organs. My friend had only 6 months to live.
I managed to speak to her on the phone, to hear her voice. The conversation was a difficult one because after a long time not keeping in touch and then calling to ask 'How are you?', seems so inappropriate. I tried hard to manage the conversation, being mindful of so many common questions not to be asked - but the 3 minute and 32 seconds call seemed like an hour long with so many pauses in between. My last wish to her was a birthday wish on 22nd December 2020. When the new year 2021 arrived, the month January that was only half way through, my friend left us – far from the 6 months which the doctor anticipated.
Thinking of my late friend who said she has no regrets for she has truly lived, it got me thinking. How many of us would truly say that we have lived our life? We often hear people sharing their regrets. But all of us were given that same opportunity when we came to the world; that is 1 life, Our life.
There are so many ways we can live our life.
There are so many paths we can take leading our life.
And There are so many directions to opt for rejoicing our life.
We understand the reality that everyone is plagued by their own sets of problems. Some people share their problems easily, others just simply take on the stride and resolve it. But, we often spend so much time looking at the dark side that we forget to live.
We want our eulogy to pen words like compassionate, kind, humble, understanding despite all of our flaws.
And how do we live by those terms?
Practise self care. This is essential in gearing ourselves in the quest of living life. Nourish our mind with good thoughts, nurture our emotions to find balance between the mind and soul.
Heal our physical self by consuming balanced diet, remembering to breathe and strengthen those muscles and joints.
When we are kind to our health, we can connect with our core values for they are mostly the kindest.
No being enjoys seeing another being being harmed.
Be the nurturing soul.
Be the one who heals.
When our health in all 3 core areas encompassing mental, emotional & physical, are fit, we will see that we can connect with our core values much easily. It is like a moment of self-revelation unfolding. Our core values are mostly the kindest and powerful. If our core value is open-mindedness, we will mostly keep our perspective broad, rarely jump into conclusion, always seeking to understand.
Our core values lead to self believe, that is trusting that we have it all to be the best version of ourselves and beyond while supporting those around us humbly. This, help create great memories in our lifetime of growth and experience.
We all love beautiful memories, because every memory we reminisce, gives meaning to that present moment we were in.
We are all capable of being living a meaningful life, we can create beautiful memories in our life and leave a footprint in one another's life which some, calls it legacy.
So, at any point of our life, we can always begin with self care towards creating beautiful memories of a meaningful life.
“We canNOT control when we come and go;
We can only control how we live our life.”
To my friend, J, thank you for the memories and thank you for answering my last call. May you rest in peace.
Stay safe, everyone! ♥
